these photos were from a visit to the burlington area about a month ago. lake champlain is our little ‘ocean’ here in vermont. my daughter’s ballet instructor noticed my photos on facebook and asked to paint a replica of one of the images…result is below. beautiful work.

before the latest round of snowfall this week, i took my younger kids out to one of our local treasures – merck forest and farm. it’s a short drive but easy to forget about – and each time we’re there, i wonder why we don’t make this little journey every single week. breathtaking views of the mountains, bucolic bliss and always some variety of precious young farm animals to see in the spring along with many sap buckets collecting for the season’s round of maple syrup.

once the snow and overcast clouds parted ways with southern vermont this morning, dreamy shades of blue and gray filled the sky for the rest of the afternoon…
at least not in vermont, anyways…. the amount of snow suited me perfectly. just enough to be beautiful and get folks in the mood to ski, thus rev up local businesses. but not the kind of road closing, power outage causing mess that consumes a weekend. was a morning full of hot coffee, big breakfast, great music and gorgeous scenery out the window.
i’ve been listening to neko case for several years now – and am still making my way through her extensive catalog of music. her tunes are rich in melody and lyric. lots to take in with every song. this one – ‘guided by wire’ – has long been one of my favorites. “life is not a constant thing. it’s only made of short stories…” (oh, and neko happens to also live in the beautiful state of vermont. listen to her entertaining and informative twitters here – @nekocase)

always appreciate being greeted back into beautiful vermont by this sign in pownal – which is just over the border from western massachusetts.
another one of my favorite cafes in southern vermont…
the newfane creamery has to be one of the hippest, most eclectic roadside cafes in vermont. with a changing selection of everything from veggie lasagna to quiche to the ‘hank williams’ sandwich on the standing menu – along with coffee and desserts like multiple layer carrot cake that was beyond outstanding, and which I couldn’t refuse…and an interior of the cafe design aesthetic that mixes rural new england earthiness with innovative upcycled industrial – it’s a destination worth searching out if you find yourself on southeastern vermont.
